Roman Influence In Nîmes

A friend recommended that I go to Nîmes. I had never heard about Nîmes before but it was just a 30 min train ride from Montpellier, so I decided to go there for lunch.

From the train station, it’s a nice 10 min walk to the city center. The remnants of the very well preserved Roma influence is evident in this smaller than Montpellier city.

Arena of Nîmes (Roman Collosium): Looked very similar to the one in Rome but in much better shape. The lines were too long so I didn’t go inside.

Bull Fights is a major event here and the locals are very passionate about it. You can see it’s presence from art to souvenirs. Of course, I had to participate 🤪

Maison Carrée: is an ancient building and is one of the best preserved Roman temple façades to be found in the territory of the former Roman Empire. You can do what the locals do, grab a seat on the staircase and enjoy the view.

Carré d’art: houses a museum of contemporary art and the city’s municipal library. Constructed of glass, concrete and steel, it faces the Maison Carrée.

City Center: Hustling and bustling with locals and tourists. You can wander through the Narrow streets which are lined with shops and cafes. Grab a seat at one of the cafe terrace and enjoy watching people over a glass of wine which is much cheaper than anything on the menu. Or better yet, have a cannelle and ice cream.

Saint-Paul Cathedral:

Jardin de La Fontaine: This 17th-century park on 15 hectares offers Roman ruins & botanic gardens, which are surrounded by ponds & sculptures. Perfect place to sun bathe or have a picnic with friends.

Tour Magne: is a 18m stone watchtower  which was part of the Roman city wall from the Augustinian era. Has the best panoramic views of the city from here, so definitely worth the hike up there through the gardens.

Norte Dame Cathedral:

After so much walking, it was time to relax again by munching on the local pastry with a glass of wine.

Time to take the train back to Montpellier to meet my new friend for dinner and drinks.
