Since January, I’ve been traveling around the world by researching and figuring out the best travel itinerary. Initially, I had planned to travel around New Zealand the same way, but after researching and talking with friends and other travelers, I realized that joining an organized tour would be an easy option, so I can enjoy the beautiful scenic drive and not having to worry about the logistics since there was no easier way of traveling within the country using the public transportation.
Haka Tours seemed to be the right fit for me because most of their clients are solo travelers just like myself as well as the flexibility they provide when you get to a town, so I can either choose the option to join an activity or spend time by myself. I decided to take the 16-day Amplified New Zealand tour so I can see both the North and South islands. For an additional charge of NZ$1399 , I opted to have a private room rather than sharing a dorm style room with others. I am so glad that I chose this option because having a private space all to yourself after being on a van with others will allow me to relax and have a good night sleep.
Since the tour would start from Auckland, I decided to come from Sydney to Auckland, two days before the fun adventure begins. I found a cute room to rent for a reasonable price in the Darlinghurst neighborhood. Being central is always a good idea when you’ve a short time in a city to explore. In fact, two days is more than enough in Auckland.
Darlinghurst, Grey Lynn and Ponsonby –
Lot of cool restaurants, cafés and boutiques can be found in these neighborhoods, which are very close to each other.
Queen Street –
From shopping to major corporations are situated on this street going towards the harbor. CottonOn has some great stuff for very reasonable prices.
Harbor –
Lots of restaurants are situated by the harbor. Great area to have drinks and dinner while watching people and the bay views.
Mount Eden Hike –
Had a nice hour hike up the highest volcano in Auckland, Mount Eden, where you can see the 50 meter deep crater from the last volcanic eruption 15,000 years ago as well as 360 degree view of the entire city.
After the hike, I walked around the area and got to see some huge houses and hidden walkways.
Auckland was a nice city to visit but not my favorite. Honestly, it was a bit slow pace for me.
BTW – “Kia Ora” means “Welcome“ in Maori. So, Kia Ora to my next journey from the North Islands to the South Islands of New Zealand.
